What Are Boat Lift Curtains and Do You Actually Need Them?

Boat lift curtains are fabric panels that attach to the sides of a boat lift canopy frame to block sun, wind, rain, and spray. They are available in supported and unsupported styles depending on your lift frame design. Whether they make sense for your setup comes down to your dock’s sun exposure, how sensitive your boat’s finish is to UV and moisture, and whether your marina or storage area has specific requirements.

What Are Boat Lift Curtains?

Boat lift curtains are side panels that attach to the canopy frame and hang down along the sides and sometimes the front and rear of the lift. They’re made from the same marine-grade fabric as the canopy top. In addition, they attach via bungee, snaps, or zippers depending on the design.

They don’t fully enclose the lift. However, think of them more like roll-up shades on a covered porch — they can be left down for protection or rolled up when you want open airflow around the boat.

What Boat Lift Curtains Actually Do

Curtains serve a few different functions. First, they block sun exposure on the sides of your boat — angles that the canopy top doesn’t cover. Second, they reduce wind-driven spray on exposed lakes. Third, they add privacy if your lift is visible from the water or neighboring properties. In addition, they reduce UV exposure on your boat’s upholstery, carpet, and gelcoat, which extends the life of those materials over time.

Do You Actually Need Boat Lift Curtains?

Honestly, it depends on your specific situation. Here’s how to think about it.

Curtains make more sense if:

  • Your lift is on an exposed lake with significant afternoon west or south sun hitting the sides
  • You have a newer or higher-value boat with upholstery worth protecting
  • Wind and spray are a regular issue at your dock
  • Privacy from neighboring properties or passing boats matters to you

Curtains probably aren’t worth it if:

  • Your lift is in a sheltered slip or boathouse that already blocks side sun and wind
  • You’re on a small, protected lake with minimal direct side exposure
  • You’re working with a tight budget and the boat is older

What Do Boat Lift Curtains Cost?

Curtains add meaningful cost to a canopy order. A set of side curtains typically runs $1,000–$2,000+ depending on the number of panels, fabric choice, attachment system, and frame size. Full enclosure sets run toward the higher end of that range.

However, if budget is a factor, a common approach is to add curtains on just the sun-exposure sides — typically south and west — rather than all four sides. As a result, you get most of the sun protection benefit at a lower cost.

Fabric and Attachment Options for Curtains

Curtains are available in the same fabrics as canopy tops — Mesh is the standard and is recommended Attachment systems vary: the most common are buckle attachment, and zippered panels for a more weather-tight seal.

Can You Add Curtains to an Existing Canopy?

Yes — curtains can be added to most existing canopy frames without needing a new top. If your canopy top is still in good condition but you want to add side protection, that’s a straightforward order. Just send us your frame dimensions and which sides you want covered. Furthermore, if you’re ordering a new top at the same time, bundling both keeps shipping costs down.
