How to Install a Boat Lift Canopy Cover

Complete installation instructions for all attachment types. Covers bungee, buckle, grommet, stretch cord, and Velcro systems.

Before You Start

Safety Warnings

Bungee cord tension: Stretching and releasing bungee cords requires strength and proper balance. DO NOT let go of bungee cords when under tension — an eye injury or other bodily harm can occur. Always wear safety glasses and proper protective clothing.

High wind: A canopy cover is a hazard in high wind. DO NOT attach the canopy to the frame if wind affects your ability to safely fasten. DO NOT leave the canopy unattended on the frame while attaching.

Boat lift stability: DO NOT leave canopies on the frame unless the boat lift is firmly in place. Sink lift leg pads into the lake bottom before installing. Settling is helped by leaving the boat on the lift for several days and covering lift leg pads with lake bottom soil to create a suction effect.

Step 1 — Position the Canopy

Unroll the canopy over the hoops of the frame. Make sure the fabric is straight with equal amounts of overhang on each side. Then find the attachment hardware on your canopy to determine which option below applies.

Step 2 — Attach the Canopy

There are 7 attachment options depending on the hardware included with your canopy cover. Find the one that matches yours.

Option 1

Bungee Loop + D-Ring (Hook over Cross Member)

Take the bungee loop and insert it through the D-ring on the canopy attachment. Loop the hook back through the bungee loop, pull it up, and hook it onto the cross member of the canopy frame.

Option 2

Two-Point Bungee Attachment

  1. Sides: Run the looped end of the bungee through the D-ring on the canopy, around the back of the hoop, and hook it around the ball on the end of the bungee.
  2. Ends: Insert the bungee loop through the D-ring, loop the hook back through the bungee loop, pull it up, and hook it onto the washer welded to the canopy frame.

Option 3

Bungee Sides + Velcro Ends

Attach the sides the same way as Option 2a (View C). On the ends, wrap the Velcro around the end frame member to secure.

Option 4

Buckle Straps

The female buckle wraps around the bottom of the canopy frame. The male buckle wraps around the top of the canopy frame. Fasten the two together to secure.

Option 5

Grommets + Zip Ties or Straps

For canopies with grommets, customer-supplied straps or zip ties are used. Slip the zip tie or strap through the grommet, wrap it around the canopy frame, and fasten securely.

Option 6

Stretch Cord with S-Hooks or Round Pucks

  1. Create a loop with a knot on each end of the stretch cord.
  2. Slip one looped end over a hook or round puck. Feed the stretch cord through the side and/or end straps, then terminate by slipping the other looped end over a hook or puck. (If cord is too long, knot one end to shorten.)
  3. To tighten, pull the stretch cord through pockets on side and/or end straps and stretch over the hook or round puck.

Option 7

Rope Slips or PVC Pockets (Wind Whip)

If rope slips or PVC pockets are provided on the canopy cover, they must be used or the wind whip warranty is void. Rope (not provided) can be attached to the frame, upright, dock, or any convenient anchor point.

On tower canopies, U-clamps and self-tapping screws are provided to secure the PVC tubing in place — one on each end.

Wind Safety

Severe or strong winds can pick up a boat, lift, and canopy, causing damage and injury. After installing your canopy:

  • Position your boat within the canopy frame to reduce the chance of wind circulating inside.
  • If your canopy includes rope slips or PVC pockets, use them every time — this is a warranty requirement for wind whip coverage.
  • Never leave the canopy on the frame during high wind if the lift is not firmly settled in place.

End of Season Reminder

Always remove your canopy cover during the off season. See the underside of your canopy for care and maintenance instructions.

Common Questions

Which attachment option do I have?
Check the edges of your canopy. If you see bungee loops with hooks, you have Options 1 or 2. Plastic buckle straps = Option 4. Grommets (metal rings in the fabric) = Option 5. A loose stretch cord = Option 6. Rope slips or PVC pocket tubes sewn in = Option 7.
How long does installation take?
For most canopies, budget 20-30 minutes the first time. Once you know your attachment method, it goes faster on subsequent seasons.
Do I need any tools?
Usually no. Options 1-4 and 7 (rope) are hand-install. Option 5 may need a zip-tie tensioner tool (optional). Option 7 tower canopies include a screwdriver for U-clamps.
My bungee cords seem too short. Is that normal?
Yes. Bungee cords are designed to be under tension when attached — that’s what holds the canopy snug. Use proper balance and grip when stretching, and always wear safety glasses.
